Visit to mannarkkad police station and interacting with LEA on Crime scene processing

On October 4th, 2023, a group of eighteen students and a faculty member, Ms. Haritha Jayachandran, from the Department of Forensic Science, visited the nearest police station in Mannarkkad..Our first point of contact was the Station House Officer, Inspector Bobin Mathew. He provided us with an introduction to the general workings of the police station, registration of cases, patrolling team etc. He introduced us to a senior civil police officer Shiji ma’am, accompanied by ASI Shyamkumar sir ,CPO Vinod Kumar sir and senior CPO Ramachandran sir. We discussed on various cases they investigated like hanging, cheating, cyber crime, question documents, narcotics etc. They explained the procedure to be done from the time of investigation till the court procedures. They also showed us seized evidence and demonstrated the working of software NEC AFIS Enrollment system, its operation for collection and recording fingerprints with the help of one of our classmate. They demonstrated the sealing procedure using the Lac sealing wax. Then they showed us General Dairy (GD), and the format for recording GD which is recorded with every events in the station daily. I-COPS software is used for recording GD. Along with GD, they showed us how to record FIR and its format. Then one of the senior civil police officers gave us a brief description about police organization(hierarchy)and particularly about Mannarkkad police station as there are 62 police officers. He also discussed about structural reformations in the police department, SC/ST provisions and mainly the role of forensic scientific officer during the investigation and some of the exceptional cases which cannot be registered by the police (non cognizable offences) but by the courts. After that we got an opportunity to attend the fruitful class by Mr Prince, an officer at Srikrishnapuram police station who is currently assisting the DySP in documentation. He began the session with the definition of crime and how they occurred in our society. He mentioned about the history of law (IPC,CrPC, IEA), hierarchy of courts, penalties and punishments of each courts. CPO Haridas sir and CPO Suresh Babu sir showed us different types of arms, loading of pistols and explained their working. They shared their experience along with some prominent cases including the murder case occurred at Ottapalam where an old woman killed her husband who was suffering from Alzheimer's disorder and also attempted suicide by jumping into the well. Other eminent case was about an Arson case happened at Kalladikkode in which the body remained unidentified hence the case became unproved. visit to the Mannarkad Police Station provided valuable insights into the operations and challenges faced by law enforcement agencies.. During our visit, we learned about the various units and divisions within the police station, their roles, and how they collaborate to maintain public order. We also gained a deeper understanding about the relationship between Forensic Scientific Officer and Police officers during an investigation. The police station has made significant strides in adopting modern technology and practices like NEC-AFIS. Overall, our visit to the Mannarkkad Police Station reaffirmed the crucial role that law enforcement plays in safeguarding our society
