INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY RIGHTS IN CHEMICAL SCIENCES: INNOVATION, PATENTABILITY AND RESEARCH COMMERCIALIZATION FOR M.SC. CHEMISTRY STUDENTS

Reported on: 03-02-2026

The Research and Postgraduate Department of Chemistry, MES Kalladi College (Autonomous), Mannarkkad, organized a highly significant academic programme on Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) on 03 February 2026, specifically designed to address the academic and research needs of M.Sc. Chemistry students. The programme aimed to provide a comprehensive understanding of intellectual property in the context of chemical research, innovation, and technology transfer. The session was led by Dr. Shameel T., Assistant Professor (Adhoc), Department of Nanoscience and Technology, University of Calicut, an expert in the field of advanced materials and intellectual property frameworks. He delivered an in-depth and insightful lecture that bridged the gap between scientific research and legal protection mechanisms. The programme commenced with an introduction highlighting the growing importance of IPR in scientific disciplines, particularly in chemistry, where innovation plays a critical role in pharmaceuticals, materials science, nanotechnology, and industrial applications. The speaker elaborated on the fundamental concepts of Intellectual Property Rights, including patents, copyrights, trademarks, and industrial designs, with special emphasis on patents relevant to chemical inventions. Dr. Shameel provided a detailed explanation of the patenting process, including stages such as prior art search, drafting of patent specifications, filing procedures, and examination. He emphasized the criteria for patentability novelty, non-obviousness, and industrial applicability with examples from chemical research and nanotechnology. The session also covered important aspects such as patent databases, intellectual property management, and strategies for protecting research outcomes. A key highlight of the programme was the discussion on IPR in academic research and commercialization, where students were introduced to the significance of protecting their research findings, especially in the context of postgraduate dissertations and future doctoral work. The speaker also addressed issues related to plagiarism, ethical considerations, and ownership of research data, thereby promoting responsible research practices. The session was highly interactive, allowing students to engage in discussions and clarify their queries regarding patent filing, research publication, and intellectual property laws. The practical insights shared by the resource person enabled students to understand how to transform their research ideas into protected intellectual assets. The programme proved to be extremely beneficial for M.Sc. Chemistry students, as it enhanced their awareness of the legal and commercial dimensions of scientific research. It equipped them with essential knowledge required for pursuing research careers, innovation-driven projects, and entrepreneurship in the chemical sciences. The programme concluded successfully, reinforcing the commitment of the Research and Postgraduate Department of Chemistry, MES Kalladi College (Autonomous), to providing advanced academic exposure and preparing students for research excellence and professional growth in emerging scientific domains.
