Reported on: 14-10-2025

A one-day field survey was conducted on October 14, 2025, at Nelliyampathy Hills, Palakkad district, as part of the programme “Addressing Cross-Cutting Issues – Field Survey of Environmental Importance.” The visit aimed to promote environmental awareness and field-based learning among postgraduate students. Eight students participated in the survey under the guidance of faculty members. The team explored different forest zones and habitats of Nelliyampathy, observed plant diversity, and collected selected specimens for academic reference. During the visit, discussions were held on sustainable field practices, conservation of native vegetation, and minimizing human impact on fragile ecosystems. The programme also focused on identifying local environmental issues such as plastic pollution, improper waste disposal, and the effects of monoculture plantations on native flora. Students interacted with local communities and observed ongoing environmental challenges. Awareness was created on the importance of responsible tourism and maintaining ecological balance. Overall, the field survey provided valuable exposure to biodiversity assessment and strengthened the participants’ understanding of environmental conservation and sustainable fieldwork ethics.
