Forensic Perspicacity: Decoding crimes through scientific investigation The lecture was conducted by Binshad M S, Assistant professor, Department of Forensic Science, Centre for Integrated Studies CUSAT. The lecture was an interactive one and kept the students involved. The lecture was centered around an actual crime scene that the lecturer had previously visited. The case was a suspected homicide with a suspicious circumstance. The victim was a middle-aged male with reputable status in the society. He was found dead in an abandoned well in a nutmeg plantation which the victim frequented along with his friend. The circumstances of the crime were explained by the lecturer and the students were asked to try and solve the case with the information on evidence the lecturer provided, that were collected by the actual investigation team during the investigation. The students approached the case with the prejudice of the case being a murder and looked for the clues of a murderer among the evidences provided to them. The students were very near to solve the case but failed to in the end. The case was then explained by the lecturer and the crime of suspected homicide was revealed to be an accidental death. Along the actual investigation of the case the victim was in an extramarital affair with a lady who lived near the nutmeg plantation which was where he was found dead. The night the incident happened, the victim was visiting his mistress and was almost discovered by a neighbor. In fear of the damage his reputation would take if the matter was leaked caused him to panic and flee the scene during which he tripped and fell inside the well. The lecture was useful and informative and also an eye-opener which preaches against prejudiced mind which clouds one’s judgement.
