Programme Overview

MA Islamic History

Islamic history generally refers to the historical study of Islam and Islamic civilization. Islamic history provides the opportunity to study the developments of Islamic thought and Muslim societies from a broad multidisciplinary perspective. It includes the range of foundational documents, traditions, institutions and history of Muslims throughout the world. This interdisciplinary field therefore includes history, religion, philosophy, anthropology, Arabic language and literature, as well as literatures in other languages including Persian, Turkish, Urdu, Arabic-Malayalam, and remains responsive to new discoveries, interpretations, ideologies and theories.

Eligibility Criteria

Any B.A. (Bachelor of Arts) degree of this University or equivalent* degree, with at least 50% marks or equivalent CGPA for Part III (excluding subsidiaries)/Core. OBC/OEC candidates are eligible to relaxation up to 5%. SC/ST/PwD candidates need only to get a pass.

PSO1

Mastery of Islamic Historiography and Sources Analyse classical and modern Islamic historiographical traditions, including sources like Quran, Hadith, and works of major historians such as Ibn Khaldun and Al-Tabari.

PSO2

Understanding of Islamic Political and Social Systems :Evaluate the evolution of Islamic political institutions and social formations from the Caliphate to medieval and modern states (Umayyads, Abbasids, Ottomans, Mughals).

PSO3

Cultural and Regional Historical Analysis: Examine the cultural interactions and contributions of Islamic civilizations in regions such as India, Spain, Sicily, Kerala, and Southeast Asia.

PSO4

Application of Research Methodology in Islamic History :Conduct independent research in Islamic history using scientific methods, ensuring academic integrity, proper documentation, and critical evaluation of sources.

Contemporary Relevance and Theoretical Engagement Critically engage with modern issues such as reform movements, Islamic thought, law, finance, and contemporary debates in the Islamic world.
