Department Profile

The Department of History at MES Kalladi College is a prominent and distinguished faculty with a rich tradition. It plays a major role in improving the social and educational status of the people in Mannarkkad. The department has been a part of the college since its inception in 1967, with Dr. Ibrahim Kunju, a historian, serving as the first principal. The undergraduate degree course in history was introduced in 1971/72, followed by post-graduation in 1983/84. The department has consistently achieved 100% results in both undergraduate and postgraduate programs, with very few exceptions. It is now recognized as one of the best departments under the University of Calicut, actively engaging in research activities and projects.   • In 2016, the department was elevated to a Research Centre, with three research guides currently active and eleven research scholars who have successfully completed their Ph.D. registration.
  • In 2021, the Department established the Gandhi Chair to advance Gandhian ideologies.
Facilities

The department has a well-equipped conference room with an audiovisual panel, an excellent Archaeological Museum, and a Megalithic Museum.

Vision of the department is to nurture the spirit of humanism and to build a society based on the sense of democracy and secularism. To enhance them to cope the challenges of the preset world by understanding the gravity of the miseries of the marginalized.

Mission

The Department of History has a mission to promote liberal learning and education by transmitting a sense of the past to new generations, fostering an understanding of the diversity of peoples worldwide, transforming academically ambitious students into lifelong, independent learners, responsible professionals, and thoughtful citizens, as well as presenting new scholarly research to help address local, national, and global issues. The department achieves these goals through its classroom instruction and engagement with the broader public.
