Inauguration of Medicinal Plant Repository
"Jeevani" is an initiative centered around the creation of a medicinal plant repository that aims to preserve, study, and promote the use of indigenous herbs and plants for therapeutic purposes. This repository serves as a valuable resource, cataloging a diverse range of plants known for their healing properties.
The Department of Botany and Zoology at MES Kalladi College inaugurated a Medicinal Plant Repository funded by Kerala State Biodiversity Board on 9th January 2025 at 10:00 AM. This initiative is part of the college's commitment to preserving the rich plant biodiversity of Kerala and promoting awareness about the medicinal value of native plants. The event commenced with a warm welcome address by Dr. Sereena K, Head of the Department of Botany. Dr. Sereena emphasized the importance of the medicinal plant repository as a tool for both research and public education, highlighting its role in supporting sustainable practices and showcasing Kerala’s rich botanical heritage. The ceremony was officially inaugurated by Mr. Fayeda Basheer, Chairman of Mannarkkad Municipality, who delivered the inaugural speech. In his address, Mr. Basheer emphasized the critical role of educational institutions in fostering biodiversity conservation and the necessity of collaborative efforts between local government, educational bodies, and communities to protect Kerala’s natural resources. Following this, the Presidential Address was delivered by Dr. Rajesh, Principal of MES Kalladi College. Dr. Rajesh, Principal of the college praised the Department of Botany and Zoology for their vision and dedication to conserving medicinal plants. He highlighted the significance of the repository in enhancing both student research and environmental awareness, reinforcing the college's role in environmental sustainability. The inauguration was attended by both Postgraduate (PG) and Undergraduate (UG) students from the Botany department. Their active participation demonstrated the enthusiasm and commitment of the next generation of botanists towards preserving and studying medicinal plants. This newly established repository will serve as a valuable resource for students and researchers, providing access to a wide variety of medicinal plants native to Kerala. The initiative also aims to promote the use of these plants in traditional and modern healthcare practices.
