The department was headed by Prof. K. Moosa (during 1967 to 1998) followed by Prof. Parameswaran Namboodiri (1998 to 2002), Prof. C.J George (2002 to 2003), Prof.P. Dileep(2003 to 2008), Prof. K. Sankaranarayanan (2008 to 2011) and Prof. Usman Vengasseri from (2011 to 2015, 2017-2018),Prof. Saritha U.K. (2018-2022), Dr. Resmi K.R.(2015-2017, 2022 onwards). The strength of the teaching faculty is eight (with 6 permanent and 2 guest faculty) and non-teaching staff is three.

Our catchment area is identified as a most backward one in Palakkad district, which include the tribal belt Attappadi hills. Till date, 23 batches of B.Sc. and 16 batches of M.Sc. have passed out. The department has maintained an average pass percentage of 90 for B.Sc. and 85 for M.Sc. The department has produced university level rank holders for both UG and PG. Many of our students have qualified JRF, NET, GATE and other competitive examinations till date.

Looking ahead, the ambition of the department is to become a competitive, inclusive, and dynamic centre of excellence for teaching, learning and research. The department has well qualified, experienced and highly motivated faculty members who can impart basics of physics and can lead students to advanced research in various fields of physics. The department strives to provide staff and students the greatest resources in terms of infrastructure, amenities, and learning environments while closely observing curriculum development to keep up with scientific and technological advancements.
