Research Centre - History
India enjoys a reputation across the globe of being the Nation, which produces world class historians, archivists and archaeologists. Research centre in the Department of History under the University of Calicut got recognition in 2016, fosters a culture of Research amongst its students, Research Scholars and faculties. The role of the centre is to help in order to improve knowledge in every field of History from macro level to micro level.
As enshrined in our vision, empowerment to Scheduled Tribes and Scheduled Castes from rural and Attappadi regions is the distinctive feature of our institution. Since most of our students are from economically and socially backward circumstances, we support them to overcome their adversities and achieve their goals and transform them in to ideal individuals of the society. Various curricular and co-curricular activities that ensure social, academic, economic, artistic, spiritual and emotional enhancement of the students. The tribes as indigenous communities have been living in the forest high lands of Attappadi since immemorial. The colonial anthropologists and administrators choose to describe these communities as tribes. So the research centre concentrated in these areas of research, the students project are assigned on tribal research and teachers MRP and Ph.D are also concentrated on this field. Faculties published many research papers on dalits and tribes.

Mission
The Research Centre of Department of History ‘s mission of promoting liberal learning and liberal education through: transmittal of a sense of the past to new generations; introduction to and understanding of the diversity of peoples throughout the world; transformation of academically ambitious students into lifelong, independent learners, responsible, morally committed professionals, and thoughtful citizens; and presentation of new scholarly research in the classroom and in the wider world of the public to help frame local, national and global issues.
Strategic priorities
At present three research guides are working in the Research Centre and twelve research scholars completed their Ph.D. Registration. The department have excellent archaeological museum and megalithic museum. History provides a store of knowledge on the past and helps individuals and students to know their political, economic, social and cultural roots. We the Department of History inculcates the values of past culture and tradition. Besides, imparting historical knowledge, the department focusing on imparting education to a socially backward region. The department is to nurture the spirit of humanism and to build a society based on the sense of democracy and secularism. To enhance them to cope the challenges of the preset is world by understanding the gravity of the miseries of the marginalized.
Tribal , Dalits, Minorities and marginalized people study:
Tribal life of Attappadi are closely related with nature. There are many tribal groups in Attappadi especially the Irular, Kurumba and Muduga. The nature centered tribal life produced a rich cultural heritage and social order and it continued for centuries. But outside people’s negative intervention in the tribal areas of Attappadi disturbed in each and every aspects of tribal life and cultural heritage. The Research Centre is helpful to understand the rich cultural heritage of tribes. They led their life with their own customs and ceremonies. The Research Centre also concentrated its study on Dalits arts, Minorities arts, songs and Dance performances.
Tribal Arts, Traditional songs, Folk songs and dance performance: Attappadi tribes have their own Tribal arts, kolams and songs. They played drums and sang their folk songs. They have their own traditional language. So they sang these songs in their own style and slang. Some of these songs are sung by them to propitiate their goddess and ancestors. They are proficient in singing their folk and traditional songs.

Research Progress: Dr. Junais P. Asst. Professor, Department of History recognized as research guide in 2017, Dr. Salahudeen O.P. recognized as research guide in 2017 and Dr. Sivadasan T.P., Asst. Professor, Department of History has been recognized as Research guides under the University of Calicut in the year 2019. Research topics are assigned on tribal research, Dalits and minorities. Teachers MRP and Ph.D are also concentrated on this field. Faculties published many research papers on dalits and tribes. They are the life members in Historical congress and conferences and published many U.G.C. care listed research articles. Dr. Salahudeen O.P. is the Life member in Indian History Congress and published many articles in UGC care listed journal. Dr. Sivadasan T.P. is Life Membership in South Indian History Congress, Life Membership in Kerala History Congress, Life Membership in Kerala History Conference and Annual membership in Indian history congress. Salahudeen P.M. and Shareef K. are the Life Membership in Kerala History Congress. Dr. Junais P. is Life Membership in South Indian History Congress and published many articles. Research scholars also published their articles in UGC care listed Journals and presented their papers in various international seminars.
