ONE-DAY WORKSHOP ON BIOSTATISTICS

Reported on: 05-11-2025

As part of the M.Sc. Forensic Science programme, the Department of Forensic Science organized a one-day workshop on Biostatistics. The aim of the workshop was to enhance student’s understanding of statistical concepts and their applications in Forensic Science and research. The session was led by Ms. Jumna T, from the Research Department of Statistics, University of Calicut. The workshop began with a welcome speech delivered by Ms .Dinsha K( Head of the Department). Other staff members highlighted the importance of statistics in scientific research, emphasizing how biostatistics plays a crucial role in data analysis and interpretation in forensic investigations. Their words motivated the students to make use of the learning opportunity. Technical Session Following the Inauguration, Ms. Jumna T conducted the main session on Biostatistics. The class was highly interesting, interactive, and informative, covering the entire module within a single day. She explained complex concepts in a simple and understandable way, making the session engaging for all participants. The key topics covered during the session included: • Introduction to Biostatistics and its importance in research • Types of data and variables • Measures of central tendency and dispersion • Probability and sampling techniques • Hypothesis testing and statistical significance • Correlation and regression analysis Throughout the session, students actively participated in discussions and solved numerous statistical problems. These practical exercises helped us strengthen our analytical and problem-solving skills. The workshop successfully combined theory with application, allowing us to clearly understand how statistical tools are used in forensic science research. The session concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by our teachers, expressing gratitude to Ms. Jumna T for her valuable time and effort. Additionally, Ms. Abhirami and Ms. Ann Theres Thoby shared their feedback, appreciating how effectively the workshop was organized and how beneficial it was for understanding the subject. Overall, the one-day workshop on Biostatistics was a great success. It was both informative and inspiring, helping us gain deeper insights into the role of statistics in forensic science. The interactive teaching approach, problem-solving activities, and clear explanations made the class a memorable learning experience for everyone.
