The lecture was conducted at Audio - Visual Lab of MES Kalladi College. The resource person for the session was Mr Dexin Joyan M.A, LL.M, Assistant Professor at NASC Coimbatore and Legal Consultant at A&D Associate, Kottayam. The objective of the lecture was to familiarize students with the new criminal law codes- the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam (BSA)- which have replaced the Indian Penal Code, Criminal Procedure Code, and Indian Evidence Act respectively. The session aimed to provide insights into the structural and procedural changes that these new laws bring to India’s criminal justice system. Mr Dexin Joyan began by explaining the rationale behind the introduction of these new legislations, emphasizing modernization, victim-centric justice, and digitization of legal processes. He discussed major reforms such as the inclusion of community service as a punishment under BNS, increased use of technology in investigation and trial under BNSS, and the acceptance of electronic evidence under BSA. The session also highlighted comparative perspectives between the old and new codes, illustrating how the changes aim to make justice more accessible, transparent, and efficient. Students gained valuable insights into how these laws impact police procedures, court processes, and individual rights. The lecture concluded with an interactive Q&A session, where students actively participated by asking questions regarding implementation, challenges and transitional provisions of the new codes. The discussion helped to clarify several doubts and deepened the participant’s understanding of India’s evolving legal landscape. Overall, the guest lecture was informative and engaging, offering participants a comprehensive view of the recent reforms in the criminal justice system. The department expressed gratitude to Mr Dexin Joyan for his enlightening talk and to all who contributed to the successful conduct of the event.
