AKASAPARAVAKAL PSYCHIATRIC AND OLD AGE HOME VISIT

Reported on: 22-09-2025

An extension activity is planned for the students and faculty of the Department of Psychology at Akasapaaravakal Psychiatric old age home in Karakurissi. The program aims to provide emotional support, companionship, and basic care guidance to the elderly residents.

As part of the community extension program by the Department of Psychology at MES Kalladi College Mannarkkad, second-year psychology students undertook a visit to Akashaparavakal Psychiatric and Old Age Home in Viyyakurussi. Twenty-two students, along with two faculty members, Ms. Megha D and Mr. Thajudheen V.P., participated in this educational outreach. Upon arrival, the group was received by Father Michael, the Director of Akashaparavakal, who introduced the institution's mission and offered insights into the daily routines and rehabilitation of its residents. The home currently shelters over ninety individuals, all of whom are either mentally challenged or have mental illnesses. Following the introductory session, students were divided into smaller groups, and each group engaged in direct, meaningful interactions with the residents, fostering an environment of empathy and understanding. These interactions were arranged in a square seating style, encouraging both openness and comfort among the patients and students. The visit concluded with cultural activities, where students and residents participated together, adding a joyful and inclusive dimension to the experience. This visit proved to be an enriching learning opportunity for the students, giving them practical exposure to psychiatric rehabilitation and emphasizing the significance of community involvement in mental health care.
