KFRI- Field Visit
REPORT ON ONE DAY FIELD VISIT: KERALA FOREST RESEARCH INSTITUTE (KSCSTE-KFRI) The Department of Forensic Science at MES Kalladi college, Mannarkkad conducted a one-day field visit to Kerala Forest Research Institute (KSCTE-KFRI), Peechi, Thrissur on Thursday, 9/09/2025. The visit was structured to cover several departments and facilities within the KFRI campus. We were guided by the representative Mr. Nisad Ahamed who provided detailed explanation about each and every division and ongoing projects. Our exploration began with an overview of the seed unit of KFRI, where we were introduced to the wide variety of seeds from different tree species. This session highlighted the diversity of flora and the systematic methods used for seed collection and storage. During our visit we explored Forest Genetics and Biotechnology where we gained knowledge about how tree species are treated and the process of seed selection, treatment and storage to ensure high quality and disease-free seeds. Forest Entomology divison provided insights of role of insects in forest health and ecosystems. Wood science and Technology division gave the information about properties of sustainable woods and its uses, and also, we had the opportunity to observe wide variety of woods from different countries. We observed various formations of soil from different regions of Kerala and learned the importance of soil in forestry. We visited the Forest Pathology Division, which maintains microbe and insect collections and develops eco-friendly methods to control forest pests and diseases. The Bamboo Nursery showcased different bamboo species, their propagation techniques, and their environmental and economic importance. Our visit included detailed study of advanced instrumentation facilities at KFRI where we gained a clear understanding of various instrumentations including Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrophotometer (FTIR), RAMAN Spectrophotometer, X-RAY Diffractometer, Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrophotometer (GC-MS), High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC), and High-Performance Thin Layer Chromatography (HPTLC). The educational visit to the Kerala Forest Research Institute (KFRI) was highly informative and enriching. The interaction with experts and exposure to advanced research facilities broadened our understanding of forest ecosystems and their sustainable management. This visit not only enhanced our academic knowledge but also inspired us to apply scientific approaches for conserving and utilizing forest resources effectively.
