REPORT ON MES MEDICAL COLLEGE VISIT On 15th November 2024, we had the privilege to attend a comprehensive and enlightening session on medico-legal autopsies at MES Medical College. The session was conducted by Dr. Hemant Menon, an experienced forensic professional, and took place from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM. Overview of the Session The class began promptly at 10:00 AM with Dr. Menon providing a general introduction to autopsies. He explained the primary objectives of a medico-legal autopsy, which include determining the cause of death, time of death, and circumstances surrounding the death. He emphasized that autopsies play a crucial role in both forensic investigations and the judicial system, ensuring justice and upholding public health and safety. Dr. Menon elaborated on the step-by-step procedures followed during a medico-legal autopsy. He highlighted the importance of meticulous documentation and adherence to protocols to avoid discrepancies in legal cases. He also discussed the role of inquest reports, which are documents prepared by the police containing preliminary findings about the death. Dr. Menon explained how these reports guide forensic experts during autopsies, especially in cases of unnatural deaths. Autopsy Video Presentation A significant part of the session involved a video demonstration of an actual autopsy. This visual aid provided a practical perspective, bridging theoretical knowledge with real-life procedures. The video covered the following: External Examination: The initial observations of the body, including signs of injury, rigor mortis, lividity, and other physical clues. Internal Examination: The systematic dissection and analysis of internal organs to identify abnormalities or causes of death. Dr. Menon paused the video at intervals to explain specific techniques, tools used, and the reasons behind certain steps. He also highlighted critical findings in the video that are essential in forensic pathology. He also explained about viscera collection and packaging by sharing a presentation on that. Following the video, Dr. Menon displayed various preserved specimens and skeletal remains. He discussed the forensic significance of each item, such as identifying age, gender, cause of injury, or disease from bones and tissues. This segment allowed us to interact and ask questions, enhancing our understanding of how evidence from human remains contributes to investigations. The session was incredibly informative and offered a blend of theoretical concepts, practical demonstrations, and real-life applications. The class concluded at 1:00 PM, leaving the attendees with a wealth of knowledge about medico-legal autopsy. Dr. Menon’s detailed explanations and engaging teaching style made the session both meaningful and impactful.This visit to MES Medical College provided invaluable insights into the field of forensic medicine, reinforcing the importance of medico-legal autopsies in the criminal justice system.
