Department Profile

The Department of Psychology of MES Kalladi College, Mannarkkad was established in the year 2021, with an aim of meeting demands of current society in molding competent mental health professionals. It offers five-year integrated PG course in psychology.

The integrated program is a degree program that merges two degrees and a single degree is awarded as a whole after the completion of the program. Integrated UG-PG Programmes combining two academic disciplines is a potential area of knowledge in the present-day context. Curriculum of integrated program aims to equip students with knowledge, skills, values, attitudes, leadership readiness/qualities and lifelong learning. The students on completion of this program will attain various 21st century skills like critical thinking, problem solving, analytic reasoning, cognitive skills, self-directed learning etc. The curriculum focuses on pragmatist approach whereby application of theoretical concepts is taught with substantial coverage of practical and field works.

Psychology is the scientific study of behavior and cognitive processes. Grounded in scientific method, psychology has the immediate goal of understanding individuals and groups by both establishing general principles and researching specific cases, and for many it ultimately aims to benefit society. attempt to understand the role of mental functions in individual and social behavior, while also exploring the physiological and neurobiological processes that underlie certain cognitive functions and behaviors. Psychologists explore such concepts as perception, cognition, attention, emotion, phenomenology, motivation, brain functioning, personality, behavior, and interpersonal relationships. Psychologists employ empirical methods to infer causal and correlational relationships between psychosocial variables. In addition, or in opposition, to employing empirical and deductive methods, some – especially clinical and counseling psychologists – at times rely upon symbolic interpretation and other inductive techniques. Psychology incorporates research from the social and natural sciences, and from the humanities, such as philosophy.

This course is aimed to develop a non conventional growth in each student through facilitating them to learn the cultural aspects of society and to apply those principles for their personal as well as professional growth and well-being. This empowers them to help the people who are in need of better mental health and equips them to critically analyze and bring changes as a behavioral analyst. The course is designed to provide a clear understanding of the clinical spectrum of mental and behavioral disorders and accordingly equip the learners to manage the needs of society in related to the mental health.

COURSE DURATION

The Integrated Program is a five-year (10 semesters) program with an exit option after the completion of VI Semester. Students who have successfully completed according to the minimum mark/grade required for pass and apply for exit option will be awarded degree in areas concerned. The degree awarded as per the exit options is as equivalent as the degrees of any non-integrated program. Students, who continue the program and successfully complete X semester will be awarded Integrated Master’s Degree.

The Department of Psychology is committed to the discovery of knowledge about mind, brain, and behavior, and to sharing that knowledge and the research processes that produce it with our students and our community consequently to develop the well-being of the humankind as a whole. The department is envisioned not only for creating more professionals to the community, rather to create an insightful youth courageous enough to happily welcome all hardships in their environment in related to mental health and well-being. The department integrates undergraduate and graduate education, research, and service activities to the complete development of a psychology professional.

  • Advancing the science of human behavior—both basic and applied—from clinical, cognitive, developmental, neurological, organizational, and social perspective.
  • Providing students with knowledge and skills about mind, brain, and behavior through innovative and rigorous courses and rich experiential learning opportunities.
  • Producing the next generation of leaders in research, in teaching, and in the applications of psychology through conventional and non-conventional methods.
  • Make them equipped to critically analyze and bring changes as behavioral analyst in pathological cases, understand clinical spectrum, to manage the needs of society in related to their mental health.
  • Sharing our knowledge and expertise, applying it to the improvement of mental wellbeing, and collaborating both locally and globally with researchers, our community, and policy makers.
