History of the department
When the college was started as a Junior College in 1967, Pre-degree course with second group (with Physics, Chemistry and Biology as the core subjects) was also introduced. The Department of Biology headed by Mr. P. Dharmapalan in Zoology and Ms. N. Ramadevi in Botany came into existence.
With the inception of degree course in 1971 the college was upgraded and the Department of Botany and Zoology was established as independent Departments. Then it was headed by Ms. Leelama Sebastian for Botany and Ms. L. Dora for Zoology departments.
The B. Sc Botany degree course under U.G programme offers Chemistry and Zoology as subsidiary subjects. The first batch of B. Sc degree with Botany as main subject had 24 students the first batch was completed in the academic year 1973-1974. Till March 2018, 45 different batches were successfully completed and passed out with bright colours. Most of the former students are well placed and are holding respectable position in various disciplines. Curriculum revision and implementation of CUBCSS was done with effect from 2014 admission.
Since our college is the only higher educational centre in Biology, situated in the foot of Attappay hills, and has proximity to Silent Valley National Park our staff members are involving in various environmental awareness programmes like Afforestation, Field trips to Ecologically significant places.
The Department also promotes organic farming through Vegetable cultivation,Rice cultivation and maintenance of Herbal garden. We are also involved in maintaining the flora wealth and preserving the serene beauty of the campus.
